Woman in wheelchair struck in crosswalk, dies from injuries

A 71-year-old woman died Thursday evening in Palm Springs after being struck by a vehicle, police reported Friday as they asked for any witnesses to come forward.

According to a report released on the department’s social media accounts, at approximately 7:20 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of South Palm Canyon Drive and East Camino Parocela regarding reports of an injury traffic collision involving a pedestrian. During the investigation officers determined a vehicle had struck a female in a wheelchair who was traveling within a crosswalk. The victim, who police said was a local resident, is yet to be named. She was transported to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative, adding that during a preliminary investigation it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor. A witness told The Post that the vehicle, a dark-colored SUV, was seen with its front wheels off the ground, resting on what was described as a mobility scooter.
