General manager hired to helm Plaza Theatre as construction, fundraising push continues

While The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre remains on track to reopen its doors in late fall 2025, the organization hired to run the facility has announced hiring for a significant role.
John Bolton, an industry veteran with numerous accolades, has been hired as the new senior vice president and general manager of the historic venue, it was announced by Oak View Group (OVG) last week. OVG, which will manage the operations at the historic downtown theater, also runs the 11,000-seat Acrisure Arena off Varner Road in Palm Desert.

In an emailed statement, OVG said that Bolton brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has served as president of the International Associate of Venue Managers and chair of the International Association of Entertainment Buyers.
“We could not be more thrilled about John’s selection,” said J.R. Roberts, president of the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation. “John is deeply committed to ensuring that the Plaza Theatre will be an important cultural venue for the entire Coachella Valley.”
Added Bolton: “I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to launch two iconic venues in the Coachella Valley – the Acrisure Arena and now, the Plaza Theatre. I couldn’t ask for a cooler experience in a community that I love dearly.”
Bolton’s appointment comes as the project to reopen and revive the theater reaches crucial milestones.
The restoration, which began in April, has been progressing smoothly, according to the foundation. Recently completed work includes essential structural repairs to meet current building codes, installation of a state-of-the-art energy-efficient HVAC system, and successful asbestos abatement.
One of the most exciting developments has been the rediscovery of original decorative stencil work on the proscenium, hidden for more than three decades. This find underscores the project’s commitment to preserving the theatre’s rich history while modernizing its facilities.
OVG will manage the day-to-day operations of the theater, focusing on bringing diverse shows to the venue. The company has promised an array of performances, educational programs, and community events, with an emphasis on emerging local artists and well-known musical and theater performances.
While significant progress has been made, the project still requires approximately $10 million in additional funding to complete the restoration and cover startup expenses. The Foundation has already raised more than $16 million but needs to secure further support to bring the project to fruition.
