Saenz brings 14 years of experience at DWA to her new role, where she will oversee the agency’s operations, including management of the community’s water resources and compliance with evolving water and conservation regulations.
“Holding this position is a tremendous privilege and responsibility,” Saenz said. “I have had the incredible honor of working closely with Steve and the talented team at DWA for more than a decade and I am dedicated to building upon our strong foundation.”
Johnson, who became General Manager in February 2024 following the retirement of Mark Krause, expressed confidence in Saenz’s ability to lead the agency.
“Esther has been a key figure in our financial management and strategic planning,” Johnson said. “Her leadership will ensure a smooth transition and continued stability for Desert Water Agency. I’m confident that she will continue to drive our mission forward with the same dedication and expertise she has shown throughout her career.”
Saenz’s appointment comes at a crucial time for DWA, as the agency faces ongoing challenges in water management and conservation. Her extensive fiscal experience and deep understanding of the agency’s operations were key factors in her selection.
DWA Board President Paul Ortega emphasized the board’s confidence in Saenz’s leadership abilities.
“We have full confidence in Esther’s ability to lead DWA’s groundwater management programs and maneuver critical statewide water policy to ensure a safe and dependable supply for the community now and well into the future,” Ortega said.
The appointment of Saenz marks a significant milestone for DWA, reflecting the agency’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in leadership roles, a news release stated, adding that as the first female general manager in the agency’s history, she brings a fresh perspective to the position while building on her years of experience within the organization.
Saenz emphasized the importance of water sustainability for the region.
“The continued reliability and sustainability of our water supply is vital for our region and the people who live, work and play here,” she said.
Johnson’s retirement in July 2025 will cap a 30-year career with DWA.
