Data on downtown parking shows low occupancy rates, leaving room for optimization
A series of in-person and virtual public meetings are being held the week of Sept. 9 with the hope that feedback will help shape strategies to improve Downtown Palm Springs parking.

Palm Springs is hosting community meetings next week to gather feedback on proposed changes to downtown parking. The meetings, scheduled for both in-person and virtual attendance, will present findings from a parking study commissioned by local resort owners and seek input on improvement strategies.
The study, conducted earlier this year, revealed surprisingly low occupancy rates in the downtown area. With an average occupancy of just 29% on days that were monitored, the data suggests room for optimization in the city’s parking system.

Data captured by drone footage and license plate recognition (LPR) technology showed 359 on-street spaces and 1,927 off-street spaces are available downtown. Most visitors parked between zero and two hours, indicating primarily short-term parking needs.
City officials hope the meetings will generate valuable feedback from business owners, employees, and residents. They are especially interested in thoughts on strategies proposed in the study. Those strategies include:
- Developing a comprehensive signage plan with mid-century modern designs to improve both aesthetics and navigation to available parking.
- Implementing consistent parking enforcement, utilizing both on- and off-street locations.
- Establishing a routine maintenance plan for parking facilities, including improved lighting and cleanliness.
- Adjusting parking time limits and implementing a no re-parking ordinance to encourage turnover.
Attendees at the meetings will also have the opportunity to participate in a “Parking Magic Wand” exercise, encouraging creative solutions to parking challenges.
The feedback gathered from these meetings will be integrated into the final recommendations, which are expected to be shared with stakeholders in October.
Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend one of the scheduled meetings:
- Monday Sept. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (virtual)
- Tuesday Sept. 10 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (in-person)
- Tuesday Sept. 10 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. (in-person)
- Thursday Sept. 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (virtual)
Virtual meetings will be held via Zoom at this link (Meeting ID: 872 5945 9170). In-person meetings will be held at the City Council Chambers.
