Welcome to Monday, and Happy Pride Week!ย If you werenโt aware, the annual Palm Springs Pride Festival, a highly anticipated event for locals and visitors, is happening this week. Itย includes music, celebratory parties, and more, all culminating with a huge parade downtown on Sunday.ย Unlike Juneโs Pride Month, our Pride Week takes place in November due to better weather conditions.ย We will keep you updated on events as best we can, but for a complete lineup of eventsย we suggest you turn toย the official Palm Springs Pride website.

๐ดPermanentย parklets discussed during extension voteย
City leaders are open to the idea of making parklets a permanent option for restaurant owners. But first, they granted an extension allowing them to dot downtown city streets for the next five years.
- The enclosures built in parking lanes of city streets were introduced during the pandemic as a way for restaurants to continue serving customers as indoor restrictions were in place. Nine of them currently exist on downtown streets, down from a total of 21.
- While critics claim they waste valuable parking spots andย can be an eyesore, the city has made efforts to enforce design standards and charge fees โ currently $1.85 per square foot โย that bring in roughly $9,000 per month.
- In voting to allow parklets through the end of 2028 last week, the Palm Springs City Council left open the idea of allowing them permanently.
- Bottom line:ย City staff was asked to provide a report within the next year that explores their economic impact and options to create more dining and walking space on Palm Canyon Drive.
๐จย Driver arrested, cyclist in critical condition
A major traffic collision involving a car and a bicyclist in the early hours of Saturday morning has left the cyclist in critical condition and the driver under arrest for suspected DUI.
- Palm Springs police reported that the incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Sunrise Way and Ramon Road.ย ย A preliminary investigation indicates that the bicyclist was crossing the roadway when the collision happened.ย
- The driver, identified as a 22-year-old Mecca man, was traveling west on Ramon Road when the white sedan he was driving collided with the bicyclist.ย The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital and is currently in critical condition.
- Bottom line:ย The police departmentโs Traffic Division is urging any witnesses to the collision to contact them at 760-323-8125. Anonymous information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers at 760-347-7867.

AND FINALLY โฆ

If you havenโt seen the latest addition to the cityโs police force, youโll no doubt get your chance this week as Pride events kick into overdrive.
Driving the news:ย Earlier this month, police took the wraps off a new design for one of its cruisersย โ literally putting a wrap ON the vehicle.
- During the past year, local designer Tom Dolleย โ who we most recently reported hadย a proposal for city parks, and in the past designed someย pretty coolย Modernism Week merchandiseย โ worked with the department on the design.
- The cruiser debuted at the Casual Concours show, held Oct. 14 at Indian Canyons Golf Resort.
Why it matters:ย At a time when LGBTQ+ rights are being challenged throughout the nation, the cityโs police department wants toย leave no doubt where it stands โ vowing to serve and protect all members of every community that calls the city home or visits.ย
Bottom line:ย โThe LGBTQ community has often had a rocky relationship with law enforcement,โ Dolle said in a recent email, โand having a symbol like this here gives people a newfound respect and trust.โ
