Oct. 20 Daily Briefing: Beneficial book sale, more affordable housing, a weekend packed with activities, and more
Today we tell you about a Saturday book sale you won’t want to miss, a ceremony celebrating a new housing project, and introduce you to our pet of the week.
Happy Friday, everyone!ย Itโs the end of a very busy week and the start of an equally busy weekend. And if you donโt have plans Saturday, worry not! Below we tell you about a special book sale you can attend, but weโd be remiss if we didnโt also mention the return of a much-loved eventย โ the annualย Palm Springs Fire Department Open House. You will not want to miss your chance to visit with the brave firefighter/paramedics who serve our city, and to check out the equipment they use (who doesnโt love a firetruck?). Head down to Fire Station 2,ย 300 North El Cielo (near the airport) from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. and show these men and women some love!

LEADING OFF

Beneficial book sale designed for lovers of midcentury style
This weekend, in between the bus tours and lectures on modernism, thereโs an opportunity to take a piece of modernism home with you, and to learn more about architecture.ย
Driving the news:ย For the first time, the nonprofit Friends of the Palm Springs Library (FOPSL) hosts an โArchitecture + Design Book Saleโ featuring books on landscape architecture, design modernism, international architecture, and more.ย
Looking back:ย Several months ago FOPSL received a huge donation of architecture and design books from a donorโs private collection and then coincidentally received another set of architecture books from yet another donor.
- The opportunity was too good to pass up, and board members took it upon themselves to individually price each of the 400 or so titles for the sale.ย ย
What to expect:ย Books range from the $5 โGoldilocks and the Three Bears: A Tale Moderne,โ by Steven Guarnaccia, a childrenโs book about modernism, to the $175 book โValentino: At the Emperorโs Table,โ a massive coffee table book.ย
Why it matters:ย The money raised from the book sale goes to FOPSL, which is a nonprofit that works on programming for the library, like summer reading for children and other day-to-day operations like the koi pond and furniture.ย ย
Details:ย The Architecture + Design Book Sale will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Palm Springs Public Library, 300 South Sunrise Way.

BRIEFLY

๐ท๐ฝย Ground broken at project aimed at aiding seniors
More than three years after Palm Springs officials offered up a plot of city-owned land for development of much-needed low-income housing, ground was officially broken Thursday on a project that will do just that.
- Members of the Palm Spring City Council, representatives from West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (WHCHC), and others gathered at the site of the Aloe Palm Canyon project Thursday afternoon, officially kicking off work on the 71-unit development.
- Coupled with Monarch Apartments and Vista Sunrise II, Aloe, which is designed to assist low-income seniors,ย is now the third major new affordable housing development currently underway in Palm Springs.ย
- The majority of the $44 million needed for the project comes from state and county grants, but between the land and additional funds, the cityโs contribution is just over $4 million.ย
- What to watch for:ย The project is estimated to be opened within roughly two years. Applications are not yet open.ย

On this Furry Friday, we invite you to meet the very stylishย Coco Chanel, a 12-year-old female cat whoโs been at the shelter since June. Staff at the shelter say she is a chatty girl who would prefer to be the only cat in the home. She may take some time to warm up to you, but once she does, sheโll be committed!
If youโre interested:ย You can visit the shelter at 4575 E. Mesquite Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on all days except for Tuesdays (open for intake and clinic only) and Thursdays (1 p.m. until 7 p.m.). You can always call the shelter at (760) 416-5718.
Make sure to check out all the other pets at the shelterย here. And get a jump start on adoption byย completing the form here.
