๐Ÿ“š Library director: Renovation plans are on track

The Palm Springs Library Board of Trustees received an update on the status of theย long-awaited renovationย to the nearly 50-year-old library during its Wednesday evening meeting, withย Library Director Jeannie Kays noting that the month of October was about all about data gathering.

  • Last month, Group 4 Architecture, the firm handling the renovation, met with more than 130 locals at an open house to learn more about what residents want from their library.

  • In addition, the library has received nearly 600 responses to its community survey. The survey closed today, so results should be available soon.

  • Kays said this month will be spent getting into โ€œnitty grittyโ€ details of cost estimates. She also said the renovation will likely be in a phased approach.

  • The library received aย $6.5 million grant from the stateย for specific renovations like new doors, windows, water lines, and air filtration, and those must be completed by March 2026.

  • Bottom line:ย Kays said cost estimates should be ready for the Palm Springs City Council to review sometime in January.

AND FINALLY โ€ฆ

With much fanfare and a little encouragement, a giant rainbow flag symbolizing the start of Palm Springs Pride was unfurled Wednesday morning on the west side of the Stergios Tower at Desert Regional Medical Center.

Why it matters:ย โ€œItโ€™s more than just dropping a flag from a building,โ€ said Palm Springs Pride President Ron deHarte before the unfurling. โ€œItโ€™s a symbol that tells people who visit Palm Springs that theyโ€™re welcome here.โ€

Driving the news:ย Pride events, including music, parties, and more throughout downtown, get underway on today, with a Latin Pride event in the Arenas District starting at 5 p.m. They conclude Sunday with a parade down Palm Canyon Drive, beginning at 10 a.m.

But wait:ย Also on Wednesday, crews began hoisting more than 30ย rainbow flags at city properties, including City Hall and the police and fire departments. Itโ€™s believed to be the first time any municipality has displayed the flags on all buildings.ย
