LEADING OFF

Carol Munro, advisory board chairperson of the Twin Palms Neighborhood Organization, stands next to the cityโ€™s newest free little library.

Free little library is miniature modernism with a unique story

The cityโ€™s newest mid-century modern structure, a free mini lending library, was officially unveiled Tuesday in the Twin Palms neighborhood.

Driving the news:ย The library, located at 991 East La Jolla, features a butterfly roof and vibrant colors that pay homage to architect William Krisel, designer of many of the neighborhoodโ€™s homes. It was made possible through funds raised by the Twin Palms Neighborhood Organization (TPNO) during Modernism Week.

  • Local firm H3K Home+Design worked with the TPNO board on the overall design, and students from College of the Desert (COD) helped bring it to life.

Looking back:ย The idea for the little library dates back four years, according to Carol Munro, the neighborhood organizationโ€™s advisory board chairperson. โ€œItโ€™s been quite a journey to get us to this point,โ€ she noted.

Zoom in:ย The dedication ceremony was attended by members of the TPNO, city leaders, neighbors, and representatives from COD and Modernism Week.

  • Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein and Councilmember Grace Garner, who donated a copy of โ€œThe Guncleโ€ by local author Steven Rowley to the library, expressed hope to see little libraries in every officially recognized neighborhood.

  • โ€œThis is one of the great things about our neighborhood organizations and having them come together for things like this,โ€ Bernstein said. โ€œI think we need 52 of these!โ€

By the numbers:ย Aย mapย available on the Little Free Library organizationโ€™s website shows three other little libraries in the city, but those are only the ones registered with the organization.
