Local organizations combining to mark Lesbian Visibility Week with series of events

Three local LGBTQ+ organizations have partnered to host a schedule of cultural and social events running all next week.

The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, the LGBTQ History & Archives of the Desert, and Greater Palm Springs Pride have joined forces to present Lesbian Visibility Week in the Greater Palm Springs area, with events scheduled next Monday through Sunday, April 20โ€“26.

The week-long program is inspired by The Curve Foundationโ€™s National Lesbian Visibility Week and includes a film screening, a wine tasting, social gatherings, and a library exhibit highlighting the contributions of local lesbian community figures.

Palm Springs Mayor Naomi Soto will open the week with a flag raising ceremony at 12 p.m. Monday (April 20) at The Center, 1301 North Palm Canyon Dr., where she will deliver an official proclamation recognizing Lesbian Visibility Week in the city of Palm Springs.

The Welwood Murray Memorial Library, at 100 South Palm Canyon Drive, will debut โ€œTrailblazing Lesbians of the Coachella Valleyโ€ on Tuesday (April 21), an exhibit honoring figures including Barbara Carpenter, Gail Christian, Lucy DeBardelaben, Ruth Debra, Marjorie Main, Joani Hannan, and Melinda Tremaglio.

Also on Tuesday, a coffee meetup and storytelling session facilitated by Ruth Debra will be held at 9 a.m. at 4 Paws Coffee Co., 2500 North Palm Canyon Drive.

That afternoon, Karyl Ketchum, PhD, will present a learning session at 11 a.m. at The Center, drawing on data from Harvard to discuss health disparities affecting lesbians and strategies for community support in the Coachella Valley.

On Wednesday (April 22), a film screening night begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, 2300 East Baristo Rd., featuring a short documentary, โ€œJoani: Queen of the Paradiddle,โ€ and a program titled โ€œLooking for Lesbians: Queer Female Identity in Alternate Film Historiesโ€ presented by Deserted Films. Tickets are $10.

A wine tasting social is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Palm Springs Bottle Shop, 383 North Indian Canyon Drive.

The week closes Saturday (April 25) and Sunday (April 26) with the Lez Go Meet Up at the Big Gay BBQ on Arenas at Hunters located in the Arenas District.

Organizers say all events are intended to affirm the stories and advocacy of lesbians, sapphic and queer women, and non-binary people who identify with the community.
