July 31 Daily Briefing: Storage project concerns, this month’s spirit awards, and more
In today’s Daily Briefing, we report on concerns about storage facilities, city honors for four residents, and why you might see nurses outside Desert Regional today.
Welcome to Thursday, folks! If you’ve never been to the Coachella Valley History Museum, you’re missing out. And while its hours are severely reduced during the summer heat (call 760-342-6651 if you are thinking about going), once we’ve cooled off you should put it on your list of attractions to visit. Two innovative additions will soon enhance the experience: a restored 1950s train car being converted into a special events dining space, and a reconstructed “desert submarine” – an inventive 1920s air conditioning system that helped residents beat the heat. Kendall has all the details about the projects in our sister publication, The Indio Post. Read all about them here!

Plans for storage facility move forward despite market saturation concerns
The Palm Springs Planning Commission unanimously approved a 90,468-square-foot storage facility on Gene Autry Trail earlier this month. The decision adds to growing concerns about an oversaturated market for storage developments in the corridor.
Driving the news:ย 1784 Holdings LLC received approval for the two-story climate-controlled facility with 41 RV parking spaces at the southeast corner of North Gene Autry Trail and District Center Drive during the commission’s July 22 meeting.
The bigger picture: Commissioner Robert Rotman raised market saturation concerns, noting the area will have approximately 1,900 storage and RV spaces across three facilities โ roughly one unit per 23 residents.
- Two other large facilities operate nearby: one completed facility with 500+ units and 36 RV spaces, and another entitled project at Gene Autry and Tachevah with 600 units that has stalled since 2013.
Market justification: Developer representative Shane Swerdlow defended the project’s viability, citing significant market research showing high demand for climate-controlled storage in Palm Springs.
- Reports from 2022 show industry construction spending on storage projects jumped from $1 billion to $5 billion annually in just three years, with Palm Springs storage prices roughly twice the national average.
What’s next: The project requires Architectural Review Committee approval before construction can begin, with commissioners emphasizing the need for substantial design improvements.

๐ฅ Nurses plan informational pickets at Tenet hospitals, including Palm Springs
Thousands of registered nurses at six Tenet Healthcare Corporation hospitals across California, including Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, will stage informational pickets today to highlight what they say is inadequate staffing and training practices affecting patient care.
- The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United announced demonstrations at at the Palm Springs hospital and Hi-Desert Regional Medical Center in Joshua Tree, among others, earlier this week.
- The union notified Tenet July 21 about the planned demonstrations, stressing they are informational pickets and not a strike. The action occurs as nurses remain in contract negotiations with the hospital system.
- At issue:ย Nurses are seeking workplace improvements including lift support to prevent back injuries, a rapid-response nurse per shift for emergencies, designated rest and meal break nurses for 12-hour shifts, and training standards requiring 12 weeks of orientation for new graduates and 10 days for experienced new hires.
