LEADING OFF

DCE seeking advisory board members from city
Desert Community Energy (DCE), a not-for-profit electricity provider, is looking for new members for its Community Advisory Committee (CAC).
Background:ย DCE is a Community Choice Aggregator, one of 24 in the state, that was formed in 2020. DCE purchases electricity on behalf of enrolled residents, and Southern California Edison (SCE) delivers the electricity and handles billing.ย
What it does:ย DCE has two plans: a more expensive carbon-free plan that residents are automatically enrolled in and the Desert Saver plan, which DCE says is comparable in price to SCE.ย Residents can opt outย of DCE entirely and enroll with SCE.
Why it matters:ย At a presentation during Tuesday eveningโs Palm Springs Sustainability Commission Meeting, David Freedman with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) told commissioners that the program has reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the city.
- A recent report revealed that the majority of power used by the DCE carbon-free plan is generated by hydroelectric power, followed by wind, and solar. Even the Desert Savers plan produced less emissions than the state average.
By the numbers:ย Freedman said DCE led to an 85,200 metric ton reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2022, the equivalent of taking 19,000 cars off the roads.ย
The opportunity:ย DCE is looking for new members to fill two Palm Springs seats on the CAC.ย ย Members advise the DCE board on programs and operations, act as ambassadors on behalf of DCE, and provide input on clean energy programs.
How to get involved:ย Applications are due on Thursday. Members of the committee will serve two-year terms.ย
- The application can beย found online here.
