College of the Desert earns full reaffirmation of accreditation through 2031
The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges closed out a yearlong follow-up review focused on the college’s governance practices, officials said.

College of the Desert has received full reaffirmation of its accreditation through 2031 from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, closing out a follow-up review centered on the college’s governance practices.
The decision, announced June 25, follows a yearlong effort by the college’s Board of Trustees to update policies, strengthen self-evaluation methods, complete governance training and clarify how responsibilities are divided between the board and the college’s chief executive.

Officials said those steps addressed the standards the commission had flagged and confirmed that governance at the college now meets accreditation requirements.
Accreditation verifies that a college meets standards for educational quality, institutional effectiveness and financial stability. It also allows students to qualify for federal financial aid and ensures their credits can transfer to other institutions.
In January 2025, the commission reaffirmed the college’s accreditation but requested a follow-up report addressing three governance-related standards: unity among board members, the board’s self-evaluation process, and the delegation of authority to the Superintendent/President.
Over the following year, the college adopted policy changes, held governance training sessions, revised its evaluation procedures and made structural adjustments intended to strengthen institutional governance, according to the release.
Superintendent/President Val Martinez Garcia said the outcome reflects the work of the entire college community.
“Our faculty, staff, students, administrators, and Board of Trustees embraced this process as an opportunity for improvement,” Martinez Garcia said. “Today’s action confirms the strength of our institution and our continued focus on serving students and our community.”
Board of Trustees Chair Ron Oden said the reaffirmation shows the college’s commitment to accountability and effective governance.
“The Board took the Commission’s recommendations seriously and committed itself to strengthening governance practices and continuous improvement,” Oden said. “This reaffirmation reflects the progress we have made together and reinforces confidence in the College’s future.”
The reaffirmation comes as the college moves forward with several other efforts, including implementation of its Vision 2030 plan, expansion of workforce education programs, new partnerships across the Coachella Valley and construction of a Palm Springs campus scheduled to open in 2027.
College of the Desert enrolls more than 20,000 students annually across the Coachella Valley and is on pace to open a new Palm Springs campus in 2027.
