Award-winning local journalist Karen Devine to receive sidewalk star this month

The longtime broadcast journalist will be honored March 27 for her contributions to journalism and the community.

Longtime broadcast journalist Karen Devine will receive the 486th star on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars during a public ceremony on March 27 at 11 a.m. at 112 North Palm Canyon Drive in Downtown Palm Springs.

The Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce announced it will honor Devine in the category of Humanitarian and Entertainment. She has been a broadcast journalist in the Coachella Valley for nearly 35 years.

Devine began her desert career in 1992 at NBC Palm Springs, formerly KMIR, where she worked for 17 years before joining KESQ News Channel 3 in 2009. As an evening anchor and investigative reporter, she has worked on the station’s I-Team.

Her reporting has covered issues including the opioid crisis, which prompted families across the valley to share their stories. Her work has focused on holding officials accountable, raising public safety awareness and sparking community dialogue.

Devine has received multiple Emmy Awards, two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and Golden Mike Awards. She also received the Athena Award from the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce and was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle.

In 2024, she was inducted into the Coachella Valley Media Hall of Fame. California Assemblyman Chad Mayes named her Woman of the Year in 2019.

Devine has emceed fundraisers for nonprofit organizations and supports the American Cancer Society, Palm Springs Women in Film and Television, The Girlfriend Factor and Loma Linda Children’s Center. She has participated in Walk of the Stars ceremonies and civic events including Palm Springs Pride and the DAP Health AIDS Walk.

She has lived in La Quinta since the early 1990s and raised her family in the Coachella Valley.
