Development permits, historic review and a mayor meeting fill Palm Springs’ agenda this week

Development permits, a historic preservation review and a new push for public input on city leadership are on the agenda in Palm Springs this week. City boards will also weigh a $40,000 sustainability spending decision as officials continue work on active transportation and climate programs.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) opens the week with a development permit request for a large self-storage project. The Historic Site Preservation Board follows with a review tied to a demolition request at a city-owned building.

The Sustainability Commission will consider funding for bike rack upgrades at local trailheads, along with leadership elections for the year ahead.

The city is also launching a new series of public meetings this week focused on the future of local leadership. The first session invites residents to share their views directly with city officials.

Here’s a look at the meetings scheduled this week:

Architectural Review Committee (Monday, 5:30 p.m., City Hall Large Conference Room)

The committee will consider a major development permit for a 92,400-square-foot self-storage facility proposed by Legacy Built Investments & Development LLC. The project would sit on a 4.2-acre undeveloped parcel at 900 North Farrell Drive.

Staff recommends the committee adopt a CEQA determination and approve the project subject to conditions. Members will also approve minutes from their July 6 meeting.

Historic Site Preservation Board (Tuesday, 11 a.m., City Hall Large Conference Room)

The board will review a city request to demolish the existing office building at the Swim Center, located at 405 South Pavilion Way. The site carries a Class 4 historic designation, and the request includes a review of whether that status should change to a Class 1 or Class 2 designation.

Staff recommends the board take no action and direct the applicant to standard building permit procedures.

Sustainability Commission (Tuesday, 5:30 p.m., City Hall Large Conference Room)

The commission will hold its annual elections for chair and vice chair. Members will consider a proposal to expand bike parking at trailheads across Palm Springs, using $40,000 from the Sustainability Department budget. The Department of Public Works would handle installation.

The commission will also hear updates from its ad hoc subcommittees on topics including bird strikes, leaf blowers, noise and light pollution, along with a staff report on progress toward the city’s sustainability and climate action plans.

Mayoral Position Community Meeting (Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m., Mizell Center)

The city will hold the first in a series of community meetings this summer and fall on the future of the Palm Springs mayor position. The citywide session includes public comment and a question-and-answer period, with officials representing different viewpoints on hand to respond.
