May 1 Daily Briefing: Honor for local hotels, Somers’ wardrobe to benefit DAP, and more

In today’s Daily Briefing we tell you which hotels in the city are getting special recognition from Michelin, how Suzanne Somers’ charitable legacy will live on, and introduce you to a pup that needs a forever home.

Happy Wednesday,ย and welcome to May, where weโ€™ve got some volunteer opportunities to tell you about. As the heat arrives, many of us like to head inside to catch a movie, including some all-time favorites that showย at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. The non-profit is once again planning to be open all summer and would welcome anyone in the community who can help check guests in, act as a hostย in the VIP room, serve popcorn โ€” you name it! Sound like something youโ€™d like to do? Reach out to Tim atย tim@psculturalcenter.orgย and let him know.

LEADING OFF

Time for a staycation? Each of the Palm Springs hotels recognized by the Michelin Guide boast crystal clear pools and plenty of outdoor lounging space.

Four local hotels earn special designation from Michelin Guide

Getting a Michelin Star is the pinnacle of achievement for chefs around the world. Now, hoteliers can strive for a Michelin Key as the famed Michelin Guide now has its own rating system for hotels.ย

Driving the news:ย The Michelin Guide has spent the last four years visiting over 5,000 hotels around the world to consider them for inclusion in their new hotel guide. In the U.S., just 124 hotels garnered either one, two, or three โ€œkeysโ€, and Palm Springs is home to four of those hotels.

How it works:ย Each hotel was judged on five criteria: excellence in architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the neighborhood or setting.

  • Mirroring their evaluation criteria for restaurants, the key system is like the star system: one key indicates a very special stay, two keys is an exceptional stay, and three keys is an extraordinary stay.

Who made the cut:ย In Palm Springs, four hotels each earned one Michelin Key: Dive Palm Springs, Holiday House Palm Springs, La Serena Villas, and Sparrows Lodge.ย Check out the rest of the list here.

What to watch for:ย Good luck trying to spot a Michelin inspector at a local hotel anytime soon. If the hotel-rating process is anything like theย restaurant-rating process, inspectors employ tactics that more closely resemble the cloak and dagger operation of a Cold War spy than a reviewer, donning disguises and adopting personas to test restaurants.

By the way:ย So far, no restaurants in Palm Springs have earned a coveted Michelin Star, but several restaurants have instead been recommended by the Michelin Guide, including: Tac/Quila, Cheekyโ€™s, Colony Club, Workshop Kitchen & Bar, 4 Saints, Boozehounds, Bar Cecil, and The Barn Kitchen at Sparrows Lodge.

๐Ÿ‘  Suzanne Somersโ€™ fashion legacy to benefit DAP Health

Iconic actress,ย entrepreneur, and Palm Springs resident Suzanne Somersโ€™ extensive wardrobe will soon benefit local non-profit, DAP Health, as announced by her husband Alan Hamel, with plans for an auction to support food banks as well.

  • Somers, who passed away in October from breast cancer, is known for her role in โ€œThreeโ€™s Companyโ€ and for crafting her look without a stylist.

  • Hamel toldย Forbesย he and Somers have long supported DAP Health, and the cause is close to their hearts, having recently lost a friend to AIDS.ย

  • Looking back:ย This wouldnโ€™t be the first time Somersโ€™ fashion has gone to a worthy local cause. In 2021, Somers donated iconic โ€™70s fashion pieces to Revivals.
