April 24 Daily Briefing: Rethinking a roundabout, wood-burning fires addressed, and more
In today’s Daily Briefing we tell you why a proposed roundabout at a busy intersection isn’t a done deal yet, why wood-burning fires might be a concern, and introduce you to our pet of the week.
Happy Wednesday, everyone.ย If you werenโt aware, weโre both kind of geeks when it comes to public transportation โ especially rail. Thatโs why this weekโs news of a groundbreaking ceremony forย high-speed rail between Las Vegas and Southern Californiaย has us particularly jazzed. Combined with plans to build new passenger rail serviceย between the valley and LAย (currently in the development stage), you could someday theoretically hop a train in Palm Springs and with a little effort board one to Las Vegas an hour or so later. Weโre all aboard for that!

Committee examines impacts of wood-burning fires on air quality
The Palm Springs Sustainability Subcommittee on Climate Action addressed concerns about the impact of wood-burning fires on the cityโs air quality and public health and took the opportunity to discuss how to inform residents about the cityโs air quality during a recent meeting.
Driving the news:ย Committee members acknowledged that while wood-burning fires are not common in the city, and recent complaints were more of a โneighbor-vs-neighborโ dispute, it still underscores valid concerns about air quality, especially for vulnerable populations like outdoor workers, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions.
Hereโs why:ย According to a 2022ย vulnerability assessment, the dominant sources of air pollution in Palm Springs are ozone pollution from vehicle exhaust, agricultural soils, and fine particulate matter and dust from the Salton Sea. Smoke was mentioned as a contributing factor to poor air quality, but only wildfire smoke.
Zoom out:ย Sustainability Commissioner Bernard Rottner reminded the room of the scale of the problem. โClimate change is here. These are the impacts,โ he said. โSo, how do we help our community?โ
- Chair Roy Clark suggested the issue might be escalating, stating, โI think itโs a bigger problem now than it was when this vulnerability assessment was done.โ
Exploring solutions:ย The subcommittee discussed ways to better inform residents, such as providing educational materials at local events like farmersโ markets and making them aware of ways to monitor local air quality through things like the South Coast Air Quality Management Districtย app and email alert system.
Next steps:ย The subcommittee plans to continue exploring the topic, gather more information, and consider actionable steps to develop recommendations that could lead to city-wide initiatives or policies addressing wood-burning fires and their impact on air quality in Palm Springs.
- The subcommittee will work with city departments to develop a comprehensive approach to improving air quality, including better communication strategies.

๐ง City Council reconsidering roundabout?
The Palm Springs City Council is reevaluating a proposal to constructย a roundaboutย at the crowded intersection of South Palm Canyon and South Indian Canyon drives after some members expressed opposition to advancing the project.ย
- City Engineer Joel Montalvo noted the councilโs hesitation during a recent Measure J Commission meeting, saying that while the proposed roundabout aims to reconfigure the busy intersection, the current intersection functions effectively. He described the roundabout as simply offering โa different configuration.โ
- Constructing the roundabout simultaneously with other planned nearby infrastructure projects, including bridge work, could lead to significant disruption in the area, according to Montalvo. He highlighted potential disruptions if the project moves forward.
- Bottom line:ย The councilโs reluctance to approve the roundabout could impact the allocation of funds for improving the Palm Canyon intersection. Montalvo confirmed that he had paused the project following the councilโs reservations, as the city gears up for various infrastructure ventures, including work on multiple bridges in the coming years.
