Library group invites you to unlock the secrets of midcentury marvels at beneficial book sale Saturday

A pair of considerable donations of architecture and design books from private collections gave Friends of the Palm Springs Library an idea. Both readers and the library will benefit as that idea comes to life.

Friends of the Palm Springs Library members (from left) Ginger Semple, Laura Miller and Michael Hirschbein have been hard at work pricing dozens of books going on sale at a special modernism-themed event on Saturday.

Thousands of visitors will be in town this weekend to enjoy Modernism Week October. If you find yourself inspired by the midcentury marvels surrounding us, you might want to pick up a book to learn more. Thatโ€™s where the Friends of the Palm Springs Library (FOPSL) Architecture and Design book sale comes in.

FOPSL is hosting a book sale dedicated solely to vintage architecture and design books for the first time.

Michael Hirschbein, a FOPSL Board of Directors member, explained that they received a considerable donation of architecture and design books from a donorโ€™s private collection and then coincidentally received another set of architecture books from another donor.

Hirschbein and his fellow board members Laura Miller and Ginger Semple thought the opportunity was too good to pass up.ย

โ€œWe were surrounded by boxes and boxes of these books, and we had the idea to do an architecture and design book sale,โ€ he said.

The three went through the existing collection of books for sale to add to the pile. Hirschbein donated some books of his own and tapped his network of friends, who also pitched in with more books.

Getting the books was the easy part. The hard part was pricing out each of the hundreds of books individually. The three have been meeting several times a week for the past several months, researching each book to come up with a fair price.

Like modernism? Like books? There will plenty to peruse during Saturdayโ€™s event at the Palm Springs Public Library.

The books range from the $5 โ€œGoldilocks and the Three Bears: A Tale Moderne,โ€ by Steven Guarnaccia, a childrenโ€™s book about modernism, to the $175 โ€œValentino: At the Emperorโ€™s Table,โ€ a massive coffee table book.

Semple said the majority of the books for sale are in excellent condition.

In addition to the books for sale, nationally recognized architect, author, historian, and critic Alan Hess will appear from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. to autograph his books, which are for sale at the library, courtesy of The Best Bookstore of Palm Springs.

The money raised from the book sale goes to FOPSL, a nonprofit organization that works on programming for the library, such as summer reading for children, and other day-to-day operations, including the koi pond and furniture.ย ย

Details: The Architecture + Design Book Sale will be held at the Palm Springs Public Library, 300 South Sunrise Way, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
