Sex clubs now OK, but not in additional areas

The City Council also tabled a decision on public nudity that centered around which parts of the body can be exposed in public.

Residents had expressed concern that sex clubs would be allowed to operate on the tracts of land marked here in red. That won’t be happening.

Fears that the city would allow a significant number of new parcels to house adult oriented businesses — including those where sex can take place — were set aside last week during a Palm Springs City Council meeting.

Driving the news: Councilmembers approved allowing sex clubs to operate, but not outside areas where adult oriented businesses are currently allowed — in manufacturing zones.

  • Some residents had expressed concern after ordinance changes were first proposed last November, fearing large chunks of land in the city would be allowed to house sex clubs. Additional zones for adult oriented businesses, however, were not approved.

  • While hotels that allow nudity exist in the city, there are currently no licensed sex clubs or strip clubs here.
  • City staff and elected leaders said the ordinance update now allowing sex clubs acknowledges that times have changed since the rules were first adopted nearly 30 years ago.

But wait: The Council tabled a decision on public nudity that centered around which parts of the body can be exposed in public after agreeing that more discussion was needed.
