SR 111 Roadway Project work in Palm Springs switching to nights to ease traffic woes

Construction on the SR 111 Roadway Project in Palm Springs will shift to nighttime hours beginning Monday, March 3 to reduce traffic congestion that has caused significant delays for motorists.

The schedule change comes after public complaints about heavy traffic and long delays during daytime construction activities.

Crews will work Monday through Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with no construction planned for Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights.

The city of Palm Springs collaborated with Caltrans and the project contractor on the schedule adjustment, making an exception to city policy to accommodate night work.

Nighttime paving is expected to be completed by late March, followed by construction of bus pads at 11 SunLine bus stop locations within the project area.

Officials anticipate the entire project will be completed by the end of April 2025.

Residents and businesses near the construction zone should expect typical construction noise during night hours, including sounds from heavy equipment, backup signals and crew communications.

Construction lighting will be used in work zones, and vibrations from equipment are likely.

Motorists will encounter lane closures and possible detours on SR 111, with limited access through intersections as paving progresses.

Paving operations will be mobile, with crews working approximately 90 minutes in one location before moving to the next section.

Crews will pave one lane in one direction at a time, followed by additional passes to complete remaining lanes.

To maintain traffic flow, major intersections will not be closed simultaneously, ensuring continued access at key points such as Gene Autry Trail at Vista Chino, Ramon Road, Dinah Shore/Mesquite and East Palm Canyon Drive.

The construction team is coordinating with emergency services to ensure access through work zones during emergencies.
