Funchess currently serves as assistant superintendent of human resources at the San Bernardino City Unified School District. He has experience improving student achievement and building relationships with employees, parents and community members while focusing on supporting students he calls scholars.

“I am incredibly honored to serve as the next superintendent of the Palm Springs Unified School District,” Funchess said. “It is a true privilege to join a forward-thinking district that proudly celebrates diversity and champions innovation. I’m excited to work alongside a passionate team of educators, staff, families, and community members who are united in their commitment to creating inclusive, engaging, and high-impact learning environments — where every student feels seen, supported, and inspired to thrive.”

Before his current position, Funchess worked as director of human resources, elementary principal, elementary assistant principal and elementary school teacher, all within the San Bernardino City Unified School District.

Board President Sergio Espericueta said the selection followed an extensive process that included input from parents, students and community members.

“After an extensive process which included input and feedback from parents, students and community members and vetting many strong candidates, Funchess rose to the top with the entire board,” Espericueta said. “Due to his stellar reputation and demonstration of integrity, strong focus on equity for all students and history of establishing and maintaining relationships among staff and community, the board is confident that Funchess is the right person to lead us forward and advance student achievement.”

Funchess earned his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Redlands, a master’s degree in cross-cultural teaching from National University, and a bachelor’s degree from Cal State University of San Bernardino.

Funchess said he plans to build a foundation of trust, transparency and collaboration. His initial goals include elevating academic success and equity while ensuring fiscal responsibility and operational excellence.

“And, just as important, I am committed to fostering safe, welcoming spaces for all scholars and staff – and keeping our community connected through open, honest and meaningful communication,” Funchess said.
