The dog parks will be closed for most of the construction period, with residents asked to use the City Hall dog park while crews work toward an October completion.

Palm Springs will launch a wide-ranging improvement project at Demuth Park on Monday (March 2), forcing the closure of both the small and large dog parks and bringing construction activity to the site for several months.

The project, which was approved by the Palm Springs City council late last month, includes improvements to both dog parks, construction of a new restroom building, ADA access upgrades, and new parking lots.

City Project Manager John Brickley said a new bathroom will also be installed near the soccer field, the Youth League field parking lot will be replaced, and a large dirt parking lot will be converted to asphalt. Netting will be installed along the perimeter of field seven, and turf conversions and field improvements are planned for the Youth League fields as well.

Brickley said the notice to proceed is expected to be issued March 2, with crews expected on site that day. The target completion date is the end of October, based on 160 working days from when the notice to proceed is issued.

The dog parks will be closed for most of the construction period, though they may reopen sometime in the middle of summer depending on the schedule.

“The dog park will be closed most of the time,” Parks and Recreation Director Nick Gonzalez said. “It may be finished in the middle of the summer, but we were kind of gauging that right now as we look through the construction schedule.”

With the Demuth dog parks closed, Gonzalez asked residents to use the City Hall dog park, which will remain open during construction. He also noted that the Demuth project will overlap with a pickleball renovation already underway at the park, and asked for community patience during the disruption.
