Aug. 25 Daily Briefing: Splash House noise report, help for baggage system, auditions coming, and more

Today’s Daily Briefing has news of our new partnership, a report on Splash House noise complaints, and word of auditions that local teens will want to know about this weekend.

Happy Monday, everyone! We’ve long been fans of the work that Nicholas Snow does at PromoHomo.TV, so much so that we featured him in one of our Profiles (read it here). That’s why we’re excited to tell you that we’ve now partnered with him to highlight his work (and he ours). To start, we invite you to tune in today as he speaks with PS Pride President (and our current mayor) Ron deHarte about all things Pride, including a new employee, a flagpole project, the inaugural Pride Equity Walk, and of course 2025’s big event this fall. Make sure to click here at 10 a.m. to watch the live show!

Splash House generates 43 noise complaints; concerns immediately addressed

Residents of Palm Springs reported more than three dozen noise complaints during Splash House’s two weekends this month. The electronic music festival generated 43 total complaints with 10 confirmed violations of noise ordinance limits.

Driving the news: The event, held at three city hotels and the Palm Springs Air Museum during Aug. 9-11 and Aug. 15-17 weekends, saw significantly more problems during the second weekend with 34 complaints and eight violations compared to nine complaints and two violations during the opening weekend.

  • Bass vibrations exceeded perception thresholds in nearly every confirmed violation, even when overall sound levels remained within permitted ranges.

By the numbers: The Riviera hotel area generated the most complaints with 11 reports on Sunday of Weekend 2 alone. City monitoring detected readings between 68-75 decibels during peak violations, well above the daytime limit.

  • Vista Norte, Rogers Ranch, Movie Colony East, Sonora Sunrise, Deepwell and Araby Commons neighborhoods all experienced confirmed violations.

For your information: If youโ€™re like us and have no idea what these decibel numbers mean, here are a couple comparison charts we found.

  • They explain that 50 decibels is considered a quiet suburb or conversation at home, or what a large electrical transformer sounds like at 100 feet, while 70 decibels is compared to a vacuum cleaner and 76 decibels is compared to a freeway at 50 feet from the pavement edge.ย

The response: City staff maintained real-time communication with Goldenvoice event organizers throughout both weekends, prompting immediate volume and bass reductions when violations occurred.

  • In each confirmed case, organizers implemented adjustments within minutes of notification.

โœˆ๏ธ Airport baggage system to benefit from $21.55 million grant

Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) has been awarded $21.55 million in federal funding to construct a new expanded checked baggage handling system as the facility experiences record passenger demand.

  • U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff announced the funding last week as part of $158.4 million distributed to 72 California airports through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant program. PSP has recorded five record months in 2025, with July passenger traffic increasing 11% compared to the same month last year.
  • The new system will modernize how checked luggage is screened and sorted at PSP, delivering improved efficiency, speed and capacity while meeting current TSA security standards.ย
  • Bottom line:ย Combined with $6 million secured last year, federal investment totals more than $27 million of the project’s $86 million cost. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with completion scheduled for 2028.

This weekend, local teens can audition for a different kind of stage production that tackles real-world issues while giving them a chance to work alongside theater professionals.

Driving the news: Coachella Valley Repertory is holding auditions today and Saturday for “Power Play,” an anti-bullying theater production featuring five roles: Bitter, Belly, Brawn, Beauty, and Breaker.

The details: Auditions run today from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at CVRep’s Cathedral City location. Students should prepare a short monologue or be ready to read from the script.

  • Selected cast members will work with professional designers, directors, and crew for performances during National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month in October.

Why it matters: The production addresses serious topics including bullying and school violence through what playwright Lindsay Price calls “compelling and honest storytelling,” with free student performances scheduled for October 7-10.
