Happy Tuesdayย and welcome to September, where the temperatures arenโt the only thing heating back up, as elected and appointed leaders are officially getting back to business. After taking August off, this week marks the return to normal meetings for committees, commissions, and boards (check out the city calendar here). Next next week sees the City Council meeting again. Weโre back up and running as well after a very nice long weekend, and we thank you for understanding why we werenโt in your inbox on Friday or Monday.

LEADING OFF

Palm Springs airport boosts security with razor wire
If youโve noticed the addition of more razor wire around the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) perimeter, thereโs a good reason for it.ย
Driving the news:ย A spokesperson for the airport said last week that officials there are in the process of bolstering security measures and addressing wildlife concerns in order to help comply with federal guidelines.ย
- The razor wire should help prevent wildlife, including coyotes, from jumping over the current six-foot fence.ย
Bigger picture:ย The airport is working on a broader plan to replace the entire fence with a 10-foot boundary, enhancing overall security.
But wait:ย Readers of The Post have also wondered about something else at the airport: What determines which direction airplanes take off and land?
- The airportโs communications and marketing specialist, Jake Ingrassia, said that air traffic control (ATC) staff determine that, and that itโs primarily based on weather and wind conditions.
Bottom line:ย During calm winds, standard procedures typically have planes taking off to the north on runway 31L. If you see them taking off to the south, that typically means the winds have kicked up.
However, itโs not always the winds that factor into the directions planes travel in and out of PSP. Pilots can request specific runways, which ATC accommodates when possible
